Hazrat Usman R.A is one of the noblest companions of Prophet Mohammed Peace be Upon Him. He had the greatest honor of being one of the early people to accept Islam as the true religion of Allah SWT. He was famous for his generosity and given the title of “Ghani” which means an open-hearted prosperous person.
He was born in a noble family of “Ummayah” of the Makkan tribe of Quresh and he shared ancestral history with prophet Mohammed Peace be Upon Him. He was knowns by his name “Usman bin Affan” as his father’s name was Affab bin Abul-as. He earned a lot of wealth being a successful trader of clothes. Here, we are going to shed light on his traits.
Being among the Earliest Muslims
Hazrat Usman R.A holds the honor of being one of the early acceptors of Islam. He embraced Islam as the true religion and followed prophet Mohammed Peace be upon him. It was one of the hardest times in Islam but he stood with Islam. Due to his early affiliation and more company of Prophet Mohammed Peace be Upon him he got profound knowledge of Islam.
The Generous Person
Hazrat Usman was a wealthy person of his time. He earned a large amount of money, especially through his trade. He always spent his money on Islam and the welfare of poor people. He bought a water well from a non-believer who was very picky about selling water.
Hazrat Usman bought the well and endowed for all people regardless of their religion, race, or color. Prophet Mohammed Peace be upon him was very pleased with his this act of generosity and gave him glad tidings of Jannah. He also bought land for Masjid e Nabwi and graveyard and he supported Muslims in every need of time.
The writer of Quranic Revelations
He was a literate person and had great command over the Arabic language and a fine style of writing. He was selected by prophet Mohammed Peace be upon him to write down the holy revelations which are another great honor for him.
The Great Islamic Scholar
Hazrat Usman R.A was a great scholar of Islam because he stayed close to Prophet Mohammed Peace be Upon him and witnessed the revelation of Islam from the beginning until it was complete. He had a great command on the subject of Quranic Revelations and he understood the verses on the Quran in its context. He had goo authority in explaining the verses of the Quran. Many notable noble companions consulted him in issues that were not clear to them.
Among Ten Heavenly Companions of Prophet PBUH
Prophet Mohammed peace be Upon him congratulated him in this world that he will be among ten highly blessed accompanying persons of Prophet Mohammed Peace be Upon him in Jannah. Abu Musa (R.A) reported:
While I was with the Prophet in one of the gardens of Medina, a man came and asked me to open the gate. The Prophet said to me,
[su_quote]Open the gate for him and give him the glad tidings that he will enter Paradise.[/su_quote]
I opened (the gate) for him, and behold! It was Abu Bakr. I informed him of the glad tidings the Prophet had said, and he praised Allah. Then another man came and asked me to open the gate. The Prophet said to me [su_quote]Open (the gate) and give him the glad tidings of entering Paradise.[/su_quote] I opened (the gate) for him, and behold! It was ‘Umar.
I informed him of what the Prophet had said, and he praised Allah. Then another man came and asked me to open the gate. The Prophet said to me. [su_quote]Open (the gate) for him and inform him of the glad tidings, of entering Paradise with a calamity which will befall him.[/su_quote] Behold! It was ‘Uthman, I informed him of what Allah’s Apostle had said. He praised Allah and said, “I seek Allah’s Aid.” (Bukhari)
Attaining the title of the “bearer of Two Lights”
Hazrat Usman R.A also holds the honor of marrying two virtuous daughters of Prophet Mohammed Peace be upon Him. Hazrat Ruqqayah was seriously ill during the battle of Badr so, Hazrat Usman R.A was not able to join. Later when she died, Hazrat Usman was very upset losing familial connection to Prophet Mohammed Peace be Upon Him. So, Prophet Mohammed peace be Upon him married his another daughter Umm-e-Kulsum to him which brought him the title of “Dhun-Noorain” which means “bearer of two lights”
Being the Third Caliph in the History of Islam
Hazrat Usman R.A was selected as the third caliph of Islam after the death of Hazrat Umer R.A. He faced internal disturbance in his caliphate. He got many victories during his rule and expanded the Islamic regime. The following are victories on his credit.
- Continuing the policies and customs of Hazrat Umar (R.A).
- Making First Muslim Naval force to expand his regime to the overseas region of the world.
- Beating the Byzantine Empire of 500 ships
Assemblage Of The Complete Holy Quran
Hazrat Usman is also known as the compiler of the Quran. He observed the difference in the recitation of Quran dialects by people of different Arab tribes.
He told Hazrat Zaid Bin Sabit to compile the Quran by collecting scattered scripts of the Quran and write only one standard dialect of the Quran. He spread the copies of Quran in standard dialect to all Muslim provinces of that time. He gathered all Muslims to read in only one dialect of Quran which was Dialect of Prophet Mohammed Peace be upon.
Martyrdom
Hazrat Usman was martyred on Friday, 17th of Dhul Hijjah, 35 A.H, at the age of 84.
